How to preserve evidence of harassment
Most victims lose critical evidence accidentally. Here's exactly what to capture, how to store it, and what never to delete.
โ ๏ธ Do NOT delete anything yet. Even if the content is upsetting, embarrassing, or frightening โ evidence you delete cannot be recovered. Document first, then decide what to do.
What to screenshot โ the complete "capture" checklist +
Screenshot everything in this order. Speed matters โ content can be deleted by the harasser at any time.
๐ Screenshot Checklist
The threatening / harassing message(s)
Make sure the sender's name/username AND the date/time stamp are visible in the same screenshot. Scroll up to capture the full conversation context.
The harasser's profile page
Screenshot their full profile โ username, bio, profile photo, follower count, and any identifying information. This proves who sent the messages.
Any posts or stories about you
Screenshot the full post with the username, post date, and URL visible. For stories โ screenshot immediately as they expire after 24 hours.
The URL (web address) of any harmful content
Open the post in a browser (not just the app), copy the full URL from the address bar, and paste it into a note. URLs are needed for platform takedown requests and cybercrime reports.
Phone numbers and email addresses
If the person contacted you by phone or email, screenshot those too. Note the exact number/address in a written document.
Any payment demands (UPI IDs, account numbers)
If someone is extorting money, screenshot any payment details they send โ these are direct evidence and can be traced by police.
Witnesses to the harassment
If others have seen the content (tagged people, shared posts, group messages), screenshot that too โ it proves the content was public.
How to screenshot properly โ with timestamp visible +
A screenshot without a date/time visible has less evidential value. Here's how to make every screenshot count.
Include the timestamp:
- On WhatsApp messages: tap and hold a message โ it shows the exact time. Screenshot that.
- On Instagram DMs: the timestamp shows above message groups โ make sure it's visible in the frame.
- Your phone's clock appears in the status bar at the top โ this should be visible in all screenshots.
- If the timestamp is not visible, take a second screenshot that shows the status bar clock alongside the content.
Use screen recording for dynamic content:
- For Instagram/Snapchat stories (which expire), use your phone's built-in screen recording to capture a video
- Android: Pull down quick settings โ Screen Recorder
- iPhone: Settings โ Control Center โ add "Screen Recording" โ then swipe down and tap the record button
Archive web pages:
- For content hosted on websites (not just apps), save a web archive: go to archive.today and paste the URL โ it saves a timestamped copy of the page
- The Wayback Machine (web.archive.org/save) also works for most public URLs
- This is especially useful for Google search results showing your name or content about you
How to store evidence safely +
Evidence stored on your phone can be lost if your phone is taken, broken, or if someone forces you to delete it. Store copies in multiple places.
Safe storage options:
- Private cloud account the harasser doesn't know about: Create a new Gmail/Google account specifically for evidence โ this is separate from your daily account. Upload all screenshots there immediately.
- A trusted friend's phone: Send screenshots to one trusted person who can hold the evidence safely
- Email to yourself: Email the screenshots to your private email account โ this also creates a timestamped record
- Printed copies: For very important evidence, print screenshots and keep them somewhere safe
๐ซ What NOT to do with evidence:
- Don't store evidence only on a shared device โ it may be accessed or deleted by the harasser
- Don't store it only on a cloud account the harasser has access to (shared Google Drive, family iCloud)
- Don't send evidence screenshots back to the harasser to "confront" them โ this alerts them to what you have
- Don't post evidence publicly before filing a complaint โ it may complicate your legal case
Document chronologically โ your incident log +
A written chronological record of events is often more useful than screenshots alone โ it gives investigators and lawyers context about the pattern of harassment.
What to write in your incident log:
๐ For each incident, record:
Date and time
Be as specific as possible โ "Tuesday 6 May 2026, approximately 11:30pm"
Platform / channel
WhatsApp, Instagram DM, Facebook comment, email, phone call, etc.
Sender details
Username, phone number, email, or any other identifying information
What happened โ in your own words
Describe what was sent, said, or done. Quote exact words where possible. Note your emotional response if relevant.
Evidence reference
Note which screenshot file corresponds to this incident (e.g., "Screenshot_20260506_113022.jpg")
Any witnesses
Who else saw the message/post? Did anyone else receive similar messages?
Action taken
Did you report it? Block? File a complaint? Note the report reference numbers from platforms and cybercrime.gov.in. Use the Takedown Resource Kit to find the correct platform reporting links.
โ
Practical tip: Use a private note in Google Keep, Notes (iPhone), or a word document in your private cloud account. Start a new entry for every new incident. Don't wait to do it "later" โ write it down while it's fresh.
Common evidence mistakes โ and how to avoid them +
๐ซ Mistakes that destroy cases:
- Deleting messages "to feel better" โ completely understandable, but devastating to evidence. Block first, delete later (if at all).
- Confronting the harasser before documenting โ if they know you're building a case, they may delete their own evidence
- Only saving screenshots to WhatsApp and not elsewhere โ WhatsApp backups can be accessed by others or cleared
- Waiting to report โ content is often deleted within hours or days. Report and preserve simultaneously, not sequentially.
- Not saving the URL โ screenshots alone aren't enough for platform takedown requests; they need the exact URL
- Editing or cropping screenshots โ edited evidence can be challenged in court. Keep originals exactly as they are.
โ
The single most useful habit: every time you encounter harassment, take a screenshot immediately โ before reading it fully, before deciding what to do. Capture first, process second.
